Read, Smile, Brush

Our Read, Smile, Brush campaign kicked off this summer. Through the MDA grant, we were able to purchase 1268 children’s books about oral health: Pony Brushes Teeth, The Night Before the Dentist, Chirpy Charlie’s Teeth, The Tooth Book, Bear’s Loose Tooth, Madison Goes to the Dentist(English/Spanish), and Open Wide. The books target ages 18 months- 10 years old.

Working with Muskegon Intermediate Area District School’s Read Early Read Often program, each book was stickered with MDDS logo & www.smilemichigan.org website to find a Muskegon dentist plus a dental talking tip:

  •  “Sing a song while you brush your child’s teeth. “If you are happy and you know it…” Or any silly song that comes to mind”,

  • “Count your child’s teeth with them. By age 1 or first tooth take your child to the dentist”,

  • “Talk to you kids about healthy foods like fruits and vegetables.”,

  •  “Talk about routines. First we take a bath. Next we put on our jammies. Then we brush our teeth. Last, we read a bedtime story.”,

  • “Talk to your child about what their teeth are doing when they eat. How does your tongue move? What foods stick to your teeth?”.

Along with the books, oral health kits including toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and a Muskegon Dental Resource information card will be given out. We partnered with the MAISD Transition School and their students helped to pack our oral health kits and Volunteer for Dental volunteers to sticker the books. The books and oral health kits will be given out at Muskegon County Oral Health Coalition’s community events, StoryTimes at the local libraries, and Play and Learn groups. Thank you again to the MDA for this opportunity to promote positive experiences with oral health and early reading. The kids have loved receiving new books and toothbrushes!
